The Plateau Most Lifters Do Not See Coming
You added creatine. Your strength climbed. You put on lean mass. Then progress flattened, not because the dose dropped, but because the cellular machinery handling creatine has a ceiling.
Creatine enters muscle through a single transporter called CRT. After weeks of consistent supplementation, that transporter downregulates. More creatine in the gut does not mean more creatine in the muscle. The bottleneck is upstream of dose.
Until that bottleneck is bypassed, additional grams of monohydrate produce diminishing returns.
What Bypasses the Ceiling
Guanidinoacetic acid (GAA) is the natural precursor to creatine. Your body uses GAA, methylates it in the liver, and produces creatine.
The relevant detail for supplementation is that GAA does not use CRT. It enters muscle cells through a separate transporter called GAT2, gets converted to creatine inside the cell, and adds to the pool from the inside.
The published evidence is direct. Ostojic et al. (Nutrition, 2018) ran a head-to-head crossover trial in healthy men. Four weeks of GAA + creatine increased muscle creatine 16.9 percent. Four weeks of equimolar creatine alone increased it 2.0 percent. The same study showed greater bench press performance and less weight gain in the GAA group.
GAA is the ingredient that separates Creatine HMB from every standard creatine product on the market.
